National Currency Tenge Day in Kazakhstan

National Currency Tenge Day and the professional holiday of workers in the financial system of the country is celebrated in Kazakhstan every year on November 15, according to the Law "On holidays in the Republic of Kazakhstan".

On November 12, 1993 the decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On introducing national currency of Republic of Kazakhstan" was issued. On November 15, 1993, the tenge entered into circulation.

In 1992, a working group was created to implement measures related to the introduction of the national currency, led by Daulet Sembaev, as well as a special group of designers to develop the design of tenge bills: Mendybay Alin, Dosbol Kasymov, Agimsaly Duzelkhanov, Timur Suleimenov and Khayrulla Gabzhalilov.

It was decided to depict the faces of the country's heroes and historical figures on the front side of national banknotes and coins. The first banknotes depicted Abu Nasr al-Farabi, Suyunbai, Kurmangazy, Shokan Valikhanov, Abai, Abylkhair, and Abylai Khan. The back side of the tenge was decided to be reserved for natural landscapes, architectural structures and monuments. Samples were sent to England. The order from the government of Kazakhstan was received by a company called «Harrison & Sons».

Since 1995, our money has been printed at the banknote factory in Almaty, and our coins have been minted at the Mint in Ust-Kamenogorsk.

Today, the tenge is the economic foundation of Kazakhstan's independence, a symbol of sovereignty, and a vital part of Kazakhstan's recent history and future.
